While we usually don’t cover anything adult related at Stream SEO, I can’t deny a lot of SEOs focus in this industry because it’s huge and there’s a lot of money to be made of. People have asked me in the past if I work with adult sites, and while I don’t, I have friends working in that niche. If you’re interested, here’s a great guide to get started!

We’re in 2019 and the adult industry has grown a lot since the beginning of the internet. In 2010, 12% of the website on the internet were pornographic, 35% of all the downloads contained pornographic material and 25% of all search engine requests were pornography related. This was 9 years ago and the industry doesn’t sleep –it evolves.

Day by day, new adult websites are launched and the industry is growing more and more. Does that make it saturated? Absolutely not. Actually, there’s plenty of space left until this industry can be called saturated.

And who knows if it will become saturated?

There are a lot of clothes brands and we see new ones every year.

Why?

Because it’s better to enter an industry where you know there are plenty of clients than to enter a limited business. What I’m trying to say is: It’s better to have YouTube than your own cinema.

So, have you ever thought about creating your own adult website but you thought the industry was saturated already? It is time to think again. In this tutorial, I will try to focus on the most important things you need to consider when you’re creating your adult website and how can you grow a website like this to bring 4 figures per month in less than one year.

I’m a Manager working for an adult Advertising Network and my job is to help adult webmasters earn more from their current traffic.

How much money do you need to start your first adult website?

Under $100.

To be successful with it?

It depends on your budget and how much will you work on it. Don’t expect to have success overnight – because no one can make miracles. Even if it’s an adult website or a non-adult one, it still takes time or money to grow it. So be patient and work smart.

Domain, hosting, niche, and platform

The first step in creating your first adult website is choosing the type of it (tube, blog, directory, forum, etc.) and the domain name. There’s a lot of work with any of these types of websites – so pick the one you like and go with it. I personally would start with a tube website as right now people are more interested in video content.

Now there are two ways you can go: start with a general tube website with all the categories or choose a niche one. I’d personally recommend you to start with a single niche and get a proper domain name. By properly domain name I don’t mean a free one – those are not recommended as it’s harder to grow in Google using a free domain name.

Now let’s say you’ve chosen the Girlfriend niche, think of a good domain name that could easily help you grow in google. As an example, I’ll choose CrazyGfPorn.com (which is also available to buy).  Now using the Google AdWords planner, we can search to see the volume of searches per month for my keywords. The total searches for my keyword are between 100k – 1M which means this niche has potential.

Could we, however, find a more searched one? Let’s give it a shot. Let’s say we want to go on the massage niche and we find the domain MassageSexxx.com domain free, how many searches do we have for our domain keywords? According to Google, between 1M -10M monthly searches.

What does this mean? It means that the second niche would be better to start with – as the number of people looking for that niche is bigger and you would get a lot of visitors once you hit the Google’s first page. We have a domain, a niche and a type of website (tube).

What platforms should we choose now?

Well, you’re in luck because WordPress has a few plugins that might help you creating your first adult website with WordPress. I personally recommend the wp-script.com plugin – as this one helps you a lot with the automation of your website. The downside of this script is the one-time price of $99 – but it would save you a lot of precious time.

One last but important thing for this part is finding a good hosting company. Not all the companies will accept an adult website so you need to find a reliable hosting. There are plenty on the internet, you just need to do a simple google search or to ask in the right places.

The cost until now should be between $10 and $110 + hosting on a monthly bases. Keep in mind that this is a long term investment – not something which will make you rich overnight.

Creating an adult website the right way

Here it comes to the legal part of creating an adult website. First, you need to make sure that your countries accept creating an adult website – you can find info about this on Wikipedia here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pornography_by_region .

Now, you need to find an established adult website and inspect their footer – usually, all the adult websites have the legal part in their footer. I’ve chosen tube8.com to check this out. As you can see there, there are 4 big aspects that you need to have in order to be legal.

  1. The terms & conditions which basically are the rules regarding their activities, where they specify that they cannot be charged in court if the material on their website affected you in any way.
  2. Next is the Privacy Policy where they specify the rules regarding the data they collect from your activity on their website. Mostly, this is the page where they assure you your information won’t be sold to 3rd parties for marketing or anything else and instead will be used to improve your data experience.
  3. Then, there’s the 18 USC 2257 statement, which is one of the laws that allow pornography in the USA, as far as I know.
  4. Lastly, there’s the DMCA takedown form, where a user might request the removal of a video if he has ownership for it, it implies him in any way or someone he may know.

All of these are mandatory if you want Google to take you seriously and index your site properly. I do not recommend to copy and paste these from an established website but to modify it according to what type of website do you have.

 SEO for adult websites

In my experience, there are 3 important factors in building a website: Quality, Content, and Design. Now assuming that you have the design knowledge or you will hire someone to do this, we will focus on the SEO. Now, we all know what does SEO means and for what is useful – it brings you visitors from search engines for free – if you do it properly, of course!

  • Keyword stuffing – you might think this is a great idea because visitors can find you for multiple keywords – wrong. Actually, Google can give you a penalty for keyword stuffing in the long term – so keep your keywords niche based.
  • Getting no-follow links – you probably think this is a waste of time, but actually the do-follow/no-follow ratio should be close to 1, otherwise, your website might look unnatural. So, a good ratio between do-follow links and no-follows links could help your website grow maybe even more than a 90% do-follow one.
  • Link building – If we compare the opportunities for a normal website to create backlinks and an adult one, you will say that the adult website has a limited range of websites where they can create backlinks – which is true. That’s the reason why I’m recommending to create smart backlinks in places that matters instead of focusing on all of them and spamming the forums. You should devote one hour per day to create backlinks, not to do thousands in a day.
  • Original Content is the key – Yes, I know you’ve probably heard it a lot – but it’s the truth. Even if you copy a movie from another website, you should upload it with a custom title and a custom description wrote by you. Be sure not to make grammar mistakes.
  • Check your competitors – Really! In terms of SEO, this one of the best advice anyone can give. Spy on your competitors because your visitors are there and it’s for your benefit to bring some from him to your website. Use web services that will allow you to see where did he create backlinks, can you do it the same? Perfect. Now, you don’t want to copy him – but to be the best in that niche. So, be smarter than him – See what he did and do it better.
  • Check regularly about SEO – Google changes its algorithms once every three/six months, so be sure to keep in touch with SEO and follow everything that Google recommends you to do. Having a site that follows the Google guidelines is the first key to succeed in this industry.

Traffic & Tricks

Now you have a website that follows every guideline that Google has but still, you don’t have a lot of traffic. So, you need to advertise your website with a few tricks in order to grow your number of visitors daily. I’m going to create a list of tips and tricks to get traffic for your website which has been recommended by various sources and webmasters.

  1. Get Social

  • Reddit – one of the things that makes Reddit special is that you can post in different Subreddits according to the niche that you’re in. Let’s say you want to promote your video in the Busty niche, you do a search on Reddit for the keyword ‘’busty’’ and you find multiple Subreddits where you can submit a video from your website (Be sure you respect the rules ). Do this daily and you’ll get free traffic for your niche. Unfortunately, Reddit has banned adult content as of 2019.
  • Tumblr – I’ve heard a lot of people who managed to create some adult Tumblr blogs using software in order to grow the followers. I don’t think that’s a good method so I recommend you to do it manually daily. In about a month or more you should have an active list of followers here and also, some free traffic for your website.
  • Twitter – Same thing as for Tumblr, there is a lot of software that follows people automatically so they can follow you back. It’s up to you if you want to do it manually or automatically. Twitter can also bring you some free adult traffic too, and you can also watermark a photo with your website.
  • Sex.com and other pin submit websites – On this type of website, you can either submit the same photos from Tumblr in order to increase your followers or you can link directly to your website. It’s recommended to link directly only when the picture submitted is with a porn actress already known and with a link out to your website. Sites like these can send you a boost of traffic also, especially if you submit quality content to it.
  • Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn – Don’t try to advertise adult here, it’s extremely hard and you may get your account blocked one day.
  1. The porn re-uploading method

This method was a black-hat technique used by multiple webmasters to drive traffic to a CPA offer and making a lot of money. People started using it in 2015 and the method is working even in 2017, however, the results aren’t the same.

This method takes a little bit of time but the results are proven to work. We won’t deliver the people to a CPA offer but to a real website where they can find videos they love – so the method is not black-hat anymore.

So, what’s with this method?

Firstly, you need to find a known adult website that allows you to upload porn videos. The list here is huge: PornHub, xVideos, xHamster, YouPorn, etc. Then you need to upload there a video with no copyright or watermark on it, mostly videos with cam girls or something similar. When you upload it, you need to put a title for it and afterward the link to your website.

That’s it!

It’s this simple. Upload it to multiple websites and wait for visitors to visit your website. Do this regularly and don’t upload more than 5-10 videos per day/per website.

  1. Submit to adult directories, forums, etc.

There are a lot of adult directories where visitors come to find new places to watch adult movies. If you search this on Google, you can find more than 20 directories like this.

This won’t bring you a lot of traffic, but these are good for your link building technique. Here’s a little trick that worked for a friend of mine. He looked on an adult directory to find a bug or a dead link then reported to the adult directory webmaster the issue. The webmaster thanks him and offered him the first spot in the “Tube websites” category for 24h. In those 24h, he got more than 500 visitors to his website from him. You can also try to do this, maybe it will work for you too.

The forums are another place where you can advertise your website, however, be sure not to spam it too much. A signature with your website and being active on that forum should be enough to bring you some visitors daily. You may also create a thread in the “Site review” category if the forum has one.

  1. The Pornstar ask & reply method

It’s mandatory for your website to have a pornstar category.

Why?

It will increase your number of visitors.

So, how does this work?

Firstly, you need to upload more than 5-10 videos with the same pornstar. I recommend you to check PornHub regularly and see what are the most viewed porn stars, the trending ones, and the newest ones. Create a page on your website for each and upload 5-10 videos.

Now, you must also find a gif of that pornstar. Afterward, create two accounts on namethatporn.com and namethatpornstar.com. With one, you should post the GIF and with the other one you should answer it using the name and a link to the category on your website. Therefore, if somebody else would be interested in the same pornstar – you’ve gained a happy visitor.

Don’t spam too much with this method, focus on adding value to with it. One good backlink worth more than 1000 bad ones. If the visitor is happy, he will return

  1. The link exchange method

Here’s a method that all the industry knows – and probably so do you. The link exchange method consists of a ‘Friends list’ or ‘Partners list’ on your website where you should put the websites you’re exchanging the links with. Be sure that he has one too in order to do this.

The only thing you must do here is speaking with the webmaster of a website in your niche and convince him that it would be for the benefit for both of you if you would exchange links – he will get some visitors from you and you will get some from him. Make sure both links are do-follow ones.

There you go, with this methods you traffic will start to grow. The social method would create a list of followers that will visit your site almost daily – within three months of work you should receive at least 1,000 visitors per day from this.

With the Porn Upload method the sky is the limit – here it depends on the quality of the videos that you uploaded and how many visitors checked your link – usually after three months of 5-10 videos uploaded per day – you should get more than 2000 visitors daily, but these visitors grow by the number of the videos uploaded.

The other 3 methods should bring you a 500-1000 per day after a certain period of time. Now you have around 5000 visitors per day and also Google indexed your website so for some certain keywords, your website would be on the first page. Check those keywords and see their monthly volume and find new ones that have volume and you can get on the first page on.

Adult Traffic Monetization – how is it done?

Monetizing an adult site requires a very different skillset. You can’t just go and slap Google Adsense or Amazon Affiliates because you’ll get instantly banned faster than a Ferrari.

You need to understand that most networks work only with mainstream traffic and if you have adult traffic you need to work with adult-focused networks. There are a ton of networks that want your adult traffic, but you’ll want to work with a network that has been in the industry for a while, has a great reputation and easy/fast payments every month no matter where you live.

Here are a few examples of the types of ads you can use with adult networks (surprisingly, you have a plethora of options):

As it’s obvious, 99% of adult content comes in the form of tube sites and videos, so in-video banners are available from several networks.

Native ads are huge and have only grown in the last 5 years. But they have recently made their entrance into the adult world as well. Native ads look like related posts on the same website but actually take you to another website.

A super new format that has made its way to the internet is push ads. You can also monetize email clicks if you have an email list from your adult site.

Obviously, old ad formats like regular banners and popups are available as well for adult content. They tend to work well and everybody uses them.

And finally, you have ads focused on mobile for pretty much all of the formats we talked about (just adapted for mobile screens).

As you can see there’s a ton of options available either for text, video, and images in your website to show ads in different positions, layouts, sizes and for both mobile and desktop devices.

But which networks have this type of ads and where can you sign up for them? Here are a few ones that I recommend:

  • Exoclick – The best and biggest adult network in the world. Exoclick can help you monetize your website with banners, pop-ups, native ads, push notifications, interstitials, in video ads, etc. Sign up here and get started. This is my top recommended option.
  • Plugrush – They have a traffic trade program, which means for every user you send to them, they will send one back. It’s a cool way to start gaining new visitors, however, they don’t mention the geo’s from where the users are coming so you might send them more value than you will receive – however, it’s a good way to increase the traffic. Also, they can help you monetize your adult traffic but the performance is way better with Exoclick.
  • – this is a well-known network that only shows pop up and pop-under ads. They have an adult category and decent CPMs because their advertisers base is quite huge.

Following this tutorial, you could grow an adult website to 50k-100k visitors per day, which can get you between $500 to $3000 per month.You must remember that at all times you must follow the Google guidelines and also that these methods and tricks take time.

Don’t expect to be the new PornHub overnight because it won’t happen. It can even get you more than three months, depending on how much time you dedicate to your website daily.

Google Announced in September 2019 that it was phasing out support for Flash from its Chrome browser following Adobe;s announcement that they would end support in 2020.  Apple users wont likely hear much about the end of Flash, in 2010,  Steve Jobs wrote a scathing review of Flash and in it explained why Apple products wouldn’t support it.

Google’s Flash Announcement:

For 20 years, Flash has helped shape the way that you play games, watch videos and run applications on the web. But over the last few years, Flash has become less common. Three years ago, 80 percent of desktop Chrome users visited a site with Flash each day. Today usage is only 17 percent and continues to decline.

This trend reveals that sites are migrating to open web technologies, which are faster and more power-efficient than Flash. They’re also more secure, so you can be safer while shopping, banking, or reading sensitive documents. They also work on both mobile and desktop, so you can visit your favorite site anywhere.

These open web technologies became the default experience for Chrome late last year when sites started needing to ask your permission to run Flash. Chrome will continue phasing out Flash over the next few years, first by asking for your permission to run Flash in more situations, and eventually disabling it by default. We will remove Flash completely from Chrome toward the end of 2020.

If you regularly visit a site that uses Flash today, you may be wondering how this affects you. If the site migrates to open web standards, you shouldn’t notice much difference except that you’ll no longer see prompts to run Flash on that site. If the site continues to use Flash, and you give the site permission to run Flash, it will work through the end of 2020.

It’s taken a lot of close work with Adobe, other browsers, and major publishers to make sure the web is ready to be Flash-free. We’re supportive of Adobe’s announcement today, and we look forward to working with everyone to make the web even better.

Steve Job’s Adobe Flash Note:

Apple has a long relationship with Adobe. In fact, we met Adobe’s founders when they were in their proverbial garage. Apple was their first big customer, adopting their Postscript language for our new Laserwriter printer. Apple invested in Adobe and owned around 20% of the company for many years. The two companies worked closely together to pioneer desktop publishing and there were many good times. Since that golden era, the companies have grown apart. Apple went through its near death experience, and Adobe was drawn to the corporate market with their Acrobat products. Today the two companies still work together to serve their joint creative customers – Mac users buy around half of Adobe’s Creative Suite products – but beyond that there are few joint interests.

I wanted to jot down some of our thoughts on Adobe’s Flash products so that customers and critics may better understand why we do not allow Flash on iPhones, iPods and iPads. Adobe has characterized our decision as being primarily business driven – they say we want to protect our App Store – but in reality it is based on technology issues. Adobe claims that we are a closed system, and that Flash is open, but in fact the opposite is true. Let me explain.

First, there’s “Open”.

Adobe’s Flash products are 100% proprietary. They are only available from Adobe, and Adobe has sole authority as to their future enhancement, pricing, etc. While Adobe’s Flash products are widely available, this does not mean they are open, since they are controlled entirely by Adobe and available only from Adobe. By almost any definition, Flash is a closed system.

Apple has many proprietary products too. Though the operating system for the iPhone, iPod and iPad is proprietary, we strongly believe that all standards pertaining to the web should be open. Rather than use Flash, Apple has adopted HTML5, CSS and JavaScript – all open standards. Apple’s mobile devices all ship with high performance, low power implementations of these open standards. HTML5, the new web standard that has been adopted by Apple, Google and many others, lets web developers create advanced graphics, typography, animations and transitions without relying on third party browser plug-ins (like Flash). HTML5 is completely open and controlled by a standards committee, of which Apple is a member.

Apple even creates open standards for the web. For example, Apple began with a small open source project and created WebKit, a complete open-source HTML5 rendering engine that is the heart of the Safari web browser used in all our products. WebKit has been widely adopted. Google uses it for Android’s browser, Palm uses it, Nokia uses it, and RIM (Blackberry) has announced they will use it too. Almost every smartphone web browser other than Microsoft’s uses WebKit. By making its WebKit technology open, Apple has set the standard for mobile web browsers.

Second, there’s the “full web”.

Adobe has repeatedly said that Apple mobile devices cannot access “the full web” because 75% of video on the web is in Flash. What they don’t say is that almost all this video is also available in a more modern format, H.264, and viewable on iPhones, iPods and iPads. YouTube, with an estimated 40% of the web’s video, shines in an app bundled on all Apple mobile devices, with the iPad offering perhaps the best YouTube discovery and viewing experience ever. Add to this video from Vimeo, Netflix, Facebook, ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, ESPN, NPR, Time, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated, People, National Geographic, and many, many others. iPhone, iPod and iPad users aren’t missing much video.

Another Adobe claim is that Apple devices cannot play Flash games. This is true. Fortunately, there are over 50,000 games and entertainment titles on the App Store, and many of them are free. There are more games and entertainment titles available for iPhone, iPod and iPad than for any other platform in the world.

Third, there’s reliability, security and performance.

Symantec recently highlighted Flash for having one of the worst security records in 2009. We also know first hand that Flash is the number one reason Macs crash. We have been working with Adobe to fix these problems, but they have persisted for several years now. We don’t want to reduce the reliability and security of our iPhones, iPods and iPads by adding Flash.

In addition, Flash has not performed well on mobile devices. We have routinely asked Adobe to show us Flash performing well on a mobile device, any mobile device, for a few years now. We have never seen it. Adobe publicly said that Flash would ship on a smartphone in early 2009, then the second half of 2009, then the first half of 2010, and now they say the second half of 2010. We think it will eventually ship, but we’re glad we didn’t hold our breath. Who knows how it will perform?

Fourth, there’s battery life.

To achieve long battery life when playing video, mobile devices must decode the video in hardware; decoding it in software uses too much power. Many of the chips used in modern mobile devices contain a decoder called H.264 – an industry standard that is used in every Blu-ray DVD player and has been adopted by Apple, Google (YouTube), Vimeo, Netflix and many other companies.

Although Flash has recently added support for H.264, the video on almost all Flash websites currently requires an older generation decoder that is not implemented in mobile chips and must be run in software. The difference is striking: on an iPhone, for example, H.264 videos play for up to 10 hours, while videos decoded in software play for less than 5 hours before the battery is fully drained.

When websites re-encode their videos using H.264, they can offer them without using Flash at all. They play perfectly in browsers like Apple’s Safari and Google’s Chrome without any plugins whatsoever, and look great on iPhones, iPods and iPads.

Fifth, there’s Touch.

Flash was designed for PCs using mice, not for touch screens using fingers. For example, many Flash websites rely on “rollovers”, which pop up menus or other elements when the mouse arrow hovers over a specific spot. Apple’s revolutionary multi-touch interface doesn’t use a mouse, and there is no concept of a rollover. Most Flash websites will need to be rewritten to support touch-based devices. If developers need to rewrite their Flash websites, why not use modern technologies like HTML5, CSS and JavaScript?

Even if iPhones, iPods and iPads ran Flash, it would not solve the problem that most Flash websites need to be rewritten to support touch-based devices.

Sixth, the most important reason.

Besides the fact that Flash is closed and proprietary, has major technical drawbacks, and doesn’t support touch based devices, there is an even more important reason we do not allow Flash on iPhones, iPods and iPads. We have discussed the downsides of using Flash to play video and interactive content from websites, but Adobe also wants developers to adopt Flash to create apps that run on our mobile devices.

We know from painful experience that letting a third party layer of software come between the platform and the developer ultimately results in sub-standard apps and hinders the enhancement and progress of the platform. If developers grow dependent on third party development libraries and tools, they can only take advantage of platform enhancements if and when the third party chooses to adopt the new features. We cannot be at the mercy of a third party deciding if and when they will make our enhancements available to our developers.

This becomes even worse if the third party is supplying a cross platform development tool. The third party may not adopt enhancements from one platform unless they are available on all of their supported platforms. Hence developers only have access to the lowest common denominator set of features. Again, we cannot accept an outcome where developers are blocked from using our innovations and enhancements because they are not available on our competitor’s platforms.

Flash is a cross platform development tool. It is not Adobe’s goal to help developers write the best iPhone, iPod and iPad apps. It is their goal to help developers write cross platform apps. And Adobe has been painfully slow to adopt enhancements to Apple’s platforms. For example, although Mac OS X has been shipping for almost 10 years now, Adobe just adopted it fully (Cocoa) two weeks ago when they shipped CS5. Adobe was the last major third party developer to fully adopt Mac OS X.

Our motivation is simple – we want to provide the most advanced and innovative platform to our developers, and we want them to stand directly on the shoulders of this platform and create the best apps the world has ever seen. We want to continually enhance the platform so developers can create even more amazing, powerful, fun and useful applications. Everyone wins – we sell more devices because we have the best apps, developers reach a wider and wider audience and customer base, and users are continually delighted by the best and broadest selection of apps on any platform.

Conclusions.

Flash was created during the PC era – for PCs and mice. Flash is a successful business for Adobe, and we can understand why they want to push it beyond PCs. But the mobile era is about low power devices, touch interfaces and open web standards – all areas where Flash falls short.

The avalanche of media outlets offering their content for Apple’s mobile devices demonstrates that Flash is no longer necessary to watch video or consume any kind of web content. And the 250,000 apps on Apple’s App Store proves that Flash isn’t necessary for tens of thousands of developers to create graphically rich applications, including games.

New open standards created in the mobile era, such as HTML5, will win on mobile devices (and PCs too). Perhaps Adobe should focus more on creating great HTML5 tools for the future, and less on criticizing Apple for leaving the past behind.

Romantic Depot operates six, soon to be seven adult stores offering sex toys and lingerie, in the New York City area.  Their flagship stores are in Manhattan and the Bronx.  They’ve been around for sometime and over the years their website aged along with other businesses seeking to help drive local foot traffic.

With the move to mobile devices in full demonstration the old RomanticDepot.com site was not responsive.  This lead the owner of the chain to build a new site that was mobile friendly and it lead to Ultimate SEO‘s involvement overseeing the process of migrating to this new site without hurting the site’s strong local SEO presence.

Romantic Depot does have an impressive keyword positioning presence in the New York City area. Even nationally they are on page 2 of results for “sex shop“.  The goal was to ensure a smooth transition to the mobile site while maintaining the SEO that had been built over the years.

301 Redirects

The new site was largely a 1 to 1 ratio.  The html static page manhattan.html went now to /manhattan/ on the WordPress site.  We placed in any one off redirects, a redirect that took any url that ended in .html and would return it without the html and a redirect for the index.html homepage to come back with the WordPress homepage at /

Backlink

Backlinks are the life blood of a sit’s ranking and it was important to ensure that those would be maintained with relevant content as well.  Using SEMRush.com we collected all of the backlinks and their existing targets and ensured those had rules as well.  While the site’s backlinks were in the tens of thousands it quick came down to a few hundred target urls that needed to be accounted for to maintain SEO.

Site Speed

Most of the work involved in preparing for the migration was speed performance in nature.  The new site when tested on GTMetrix.com was loading in 12.6 seconds with over 400 http requests. We targeted a 3 second load and through Cloudflare.com we were able to utilize a CDN that brought the site closer to users as well as offered other benefits.  Cloudflare alone brough the site load time to about 7 seconds.

We further limited content that could be on other pages for those other pages such as Google maps to the location homepages. Instituting lazy load ended up being the primary aspect of speeding up the site.  Image optimization was also completed and a move to PHP7.3 from 5.6.  Merging CSS and JS files also worked to reduce the requests.

With our work to provide a faster site complete the migration was completed and load times on the site are under 3 seconds for mobile users.

Multi Domain Strategy Consolidation

During the migration I also mentioned the value of building one brand.  RomanticDepotSuperStore.com was the site used as the online store for the chain.

The problem that arises from multiple domain strategies is the segmentation of resources and confusion it can cause to Google Analytics.  An easy eample of this is the bounce rate and pageviews metrics are actually hurt on the primary domain.

Consider this… a person searches romantic depot on Google.  The first result is their site, likely the person is going to want to know what items might be at the store.  Once the page loads they find the link to the store, maybe even before the page loads.  Clicking that link they are now taken to a new domain.

That visitors actions would have counted as a bounced visitor.  See when someone goes to your site and immediately leaves for another site that signals to Google that what was on that original site wasn’t what the searcher wanted.  To prevent future searchers from going to a site that people leave directly after going to it they might increase the position of other sites to try and correct for this in the future.  That ultimately means the top spot position for the keyword is being hampered by the site’s structure.

Further Google sees that a person wasn’t even interested enough in the site to look at a second page, they just left.  In realty the second site is part of the same overall topic or brand its just that Google doesn’t necessarily understand that.  An artificially inflated bounce rate and lower page views are all that the first site is getting and the second site is losing out as well as most of the marketing is surrounding the first site’s address…backlinks, social mentions and such.

Lower Bounce Rate

The illustration above shows our page views of the main root domain.  Guess when on the graph the romanticdepotsuperstore.com site was rolled into the main domains … late July.  The thing is, the traffic isn’t any greater its just not split up anymore.  The homepage link to the store is now going to a subfolder of the same domain, its helping by acting as another page view rather than hurting the site as a bounce.

The keywords and authority of this additional site were better utilized under the main domain RomanticDepot.com and this site was migrated to a subfolder /store as a separate WordPress site.

Thats important the site was migrated as a separate site under the original.  This was done for multiple reason and it creates its own set of unique challenges but we’ll discuss that later in a future post.

Consolidated Backlinks

The consolidation of the sites further helps with SEO because after we migrated we put into place redirects from the store’s domain to its new home within the subfolder.  That means all the backlinks now combine to help one site.  Lets consider the following illustration…

Domain A: DA 30 Backlinks: 10,000 Referring Domains: 1,000

Domain B: DA 30 Backlinks: 9,000 Referring Domains: 900

Competitor: DA 35 Backlinks: 13,000 Referring Domains: 1,300

Lets assume everything else is the same…we’d expect then that Competitor will rank higher on Google Search.  But if we combine Domain A ad Domain B.

Domain AB: DA 40 Backlinks: 19,000 Referring Domains: 1,900

Everything else still the same….Domain AB will now rank higher than the Competitor.

Transcript hi I’m Maile Ohye and I work with Google search I like to share advice to help you hire a useful SEO and prevent hiring a bad SEO one who you might pay a lot of money without positive results or even worse one who implements shady practices on your website that result in a reduction in search rankings SEO stands for search engine optimization – some SEO seems like black magic having worked with Google search for over a decade what I’ve learned is that first it’s not black magic and second if you want long-term success there aren’t any quick magical tricks that an SEO will provide so that your site ranks number one it’s important to note that an SEO potential is only as high as the quality of your business or website so successful SEO helps your website put your best foot forward so that it ranks appropriately in the spot where an unbiased potential customer would expect your site to be seen a successful SEO also looks to improve the entire searcher experience from search results to clicking on your website and potentially converting a good SEO will recommend best practices for a search friendly site from basic things like descriptive page titles for a blog or small business to more complex things like language markup for a multilingual global site SEO is ensure that you’re serving your online customers a good experience especially those coming from a search engine and that your site is helpful whether they’re using a desktop computer or mobile phone in most cases the SEO will need four months to a year to help your business first implement improvements and then see potential benefit my strongest advice when working with an SEO is to request if they corroborate their recommendation with a documented statement from Google either in a Help Center article video or Google a response in a forum that supports both one the SEO description of the issue that needs to be improved to help with ranking and to the approach they prescribed to accomplishing this tasks requesting these two bits of information will help prevent hiring a poor SEO who might otherwise convince you to do useless things like add more words to the keyword meta tag or by links because if you search for google advice on this topic you’d see blog posts and videos from us that clearly explain that adding keywords to the meta tag wouldn’t help furthermore while google uses links for page rank our documentation highlights that we strongly advise against the approach of buying links for the purpose of increasing page rank one basic rule is that in a majority of cases doing what’s good for SEO is also doing what’s good for your online customers things like having a mobile-friendly website good navigation and building a great brand additionally if you’re a more established brand with complicated legacy systems then good search friendly best practices likely involved paying off some of your site’s technical debt such as updating your infrastructure so that your website is agile and able to implement features faster in the long term if you own a small local business you can probably do the initial work yourself check out our 30-minute video series on how to build an online presence for your local business now if you still believe you want to hire an SEO here’s a general process one conduct a two way interview with your potential SEO check that they seem generally interested in you and your business to check their references three act four and you’ll probably have to pay for a technical and search audit 4 decide if you want to hire let’s break this down and start with step 1 conduct a two-way interview in the interview here are some things to look for a good SEO doesn’t focus only on search engine ranking but how they can help your business so they should ask questions like what makes your business content and/or service unique and therefore valuable to customers they want to know this information to make sure it’s highlighted on your website for your current and potential new audience – what does your common customer look like and how do they currently find your website 3 how does your business make money and how can search help for what other channels are you using offline advertising social networks 5 who are your competitors what do they do well online and potentially offline if the SEO doesn’t seem interested in learning about your business from a holistic standpoint look elsewhere it’s difficult to do good SEO without knowing about a business’s goals their customers and other existing marketing efforts SEO should complement your existing work the second step in hiring an SEO is to check references if your potential SEO provides prior clients be sure to check their references you want to hear from past clients that the SEO was able to provide useful guidance and worked effectively with their developers designers UX researchers and our marketers a good SEO should feel like someone you can work with learn from experiment with and who generally cares about you and your business not just getting your site the highest rank as ultimately those techniques rarely last long if they work at all they’ll want to educate you and your staff on how search engines work so that SEO becomes part of your general business operations step 3 is to request a technical and search audit if you trust your SEO candidate give them restricted view not full or right access to your Google search console data and even your analytics data before they actually modify anything on your website have them conduct a technical and search audit to give you a prioritized list of what they think should be improved for SEO if you’re a larger business you can hire multiple SEO to run audits and prioritize improvements see what each has to say and then determine who you could work with the best in the audit the SEO should prioritize improvements with a structure like one the issue to the suggested improvement 3 an estimate on the overall investment in other words the time energy or money it would take for your developers to implement the improvement and for Google search as well as searchers and customers to recognize the improvement the SEO will need to talk with your developers to better understand what technical constraints may exist for the estimated positive business impact the impact might be a ranking improvement that will lead to more visitors and conversions or perhaps the positive impact comes from a back-end change that cleans up your site and helps your brand be more agile in the future five a plan of how to iterate and improve on the implementation or perhaps how to experiment and fail fast should the results not meet expectations that covers the structure of the technical and search audit now let’s talk about each of these audits individually in the technical audit your SEO should be able to review your site for issues related to internal linking crawl ability URL parameters server connectivity and response codes to name some if they mention that your site has duplicate content problems that need to be corrected make sure they show you the specific URLs that are competing for the same query or that they explained it should be cleaned up for long term site health not initial growth I mention this because lots of duplicate content exists on web sites and often it’s not a pressing problem in this search audit your potential SEO will likely break down your search queries into categories like branded and unbranded terms branded terms are those with your business or website’s name like a search for Gmail is a branded term while the search for email is an unbranded or general keyword an SEO should make sure that for branded queries such as Gmail your website is providing a great experience that allows customers who know your brand or website to easily find exactly what they need and potentially convert they might recommend improvements that help the entire searcher experience from what the searcher sees in search results to when they click on a result and use your website for unbranded queries an SEO can help you better make sense of the online competitive landscape they can tell you things like here are the types of queries it would make sense for your business to rank but here’s what your competition is done and why I think they rank where they do for instance perhaps your competition has great reviews really shareable content or they run a highly reputable site an SEO will provide recommendations for how to improve rankings for these queries and the entire searcher experience they’ll introduce ideas like update obsolete content they might say your site is suffering because some of your well ranking content is obsolete has poor navigation a useless page title or isn’t mobile-friendly let’s improve these pages and see if more website visitors convert and purchase or if they can micro convert meaning that perhaps they subscribe or share content improve internal linking your SEO might say your site is suffering because some of your best articles are too far from the homepage and users would have a hard time finding it we can better internally link to your content to feature it more prominently generate buzz the SEO might say you have great content but not enough people know we can try to get more user interaction and generate buzz perhaps through social media or business relationships this will help us attract more potential customers and perhaps garner natural links to your site learn from the competition your SEO might explain here’s what your competitors do well can you reach parity with this and potentially surpass them in utilities or can you better show customers your business’s unique value again a good SEO will try to prioritize what ideas can bring your business the most improvement for the least investment and what improvements may take more time but help growth in the long term once they talk with you and other members of your team such as developers or marketers they’ll help your business forge a path ahead the last thing I want to mention is that when I talk with SEO s one of the biggest holdups to improving away site isn’t there recommendation but it’s the business making time to implement their ideas if you’re not ready to commit to making SEO improvements while getting an SEO audit may be helpful make sure that your entire organization is on board else your SEO improvements may be non-existent regardless of who you hire so that wraps it up thanks for
