Highlands Campaign Site

A site that I was lucky to work on during this 2020 election was that of Shawn Reilly, a candidate for Louisville Metro Council District 8.   The site is aesthetically pleasing, the candidate picked out a good template for that.  The template does incorporate some oddities in its coding and utilizes a page builder that was new to me.  Elementor remains my go to favorite page builder and is widely used, this template uses Bold Builder which reminds me a little bit of King or WP Page Bakery.

The page builder can be unintuitive and clunky at times requiring creative fixes and CSS hacks.  Ultimately though I’d say the page builder is neither an asset or a liability for this theme.

Reillyforcouncil.com wasn’t my preferred domain name, I prefer the candidate’s name but I joined the effort after the initial decisions were made, including the web host.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had an effect on the election.  The way it is carried out and the date have had to adapt.  The candidate created a smart section to the site about this new factor in the election.  A Coronavirus resource page for Louisville called Highlands Strong is now up and running.   This resource may eclipse the typical draw on a campaign site such as the Issues page which outlines the candidates causes for the Highlands neighborhood.

This candidate site has been an exception to my past ones with a more involved candidate and that has translated into a less controlled environment for me.  You might think a more involved client is better but generally in SEO the more centralized the decision making process with an SEO the better the results for the site.  Where a candidate might know his or her message to voters, the SEO knows how to get Google to deliver that message to the intended voters.

Shawn Reilly Is A Doer

The candidate for Louisville’s Metro Council race is a doer.  He’s know as a hands on neighborhood champion and that message was the primary focus.   It’s been evident in past news articles such as when Shawn did the city’s neglected work and paved a pothole.  This grass roots can do mentality may be great for a councilman.   He’s experienced in local politics and serves as the president of a neighborhood association within the Highlands.

Notice that the site receives an A in PageSpeed.  As I have noted to many clients this is not telling you that the site has a good page speed.  This just reflects how much optimization is incorporated on the metrics that GTMetrix reviews.  It can be said then that this site is optimized and the page speed won’t be improved through more optimization.

I prefer for SEO efforts to have the site on a VPS cloud server but the site is hosted on a shared plan, much like most clients begin with these are budget options but tend to come with speed deficiencies.  Speed wise the site is clocking in at 5.9s which is double the standard goal of 3 seconds.  The lack of a CDN is something I plan to address with the candidate this week.  Obviously my preferred vendor here is Cloudflare.  I suspect that will move the site load closer to 3 seconds…generally a CDN cuts load times in half.

SEO Is More Than The Content

Social Media is paramount in providing early rankings in Google with desired keywords.  The work we did together was primarily focused on the site’s creation, he has worked to bolster the content but the site’s SEO efforts haven’t really been addressed.  These largely fell outside of the scope of the work I was hired to do but are coming to my attention as a need to deliver a solution that really works for the client.

I’ve noted in previous articles and also on Quora that SEO is more about what happens off site than what happens on the page.  In Is SEO optimization easier than we are led to believe?  I noted “Anyone who thinks SEO is about content should go out and build a site with the absolute best content and then sit there and tell us what happens. If you want a spoiler, nothing happens…you’re content will sit there alone and die a slow death from loneliness. If youre tinkering with the content you must have already done the hard work, that actually makes up about 75% of a site’s ability to rank. Or you don’t know what ranking factors are more important and then yes….you can believe you’re doing SEO. Most ranking factors have nothing to do with the on page factors.”

In this case the site has the content and has the regular updates but at present is ranking for only about 2 keywords on Google.  The opponents site is not ranking any better which demonstrates that Political SEO is still too often an after thought.  I hear campaigns now and then say that they hadn’t seen results in the past, and thats largely because SEO wasn’t given the same priority as building the site itself.

Political SEO Case Study

This creates an interesting opportunity for me to demonstrate the changes a site might receive with a concerted SEO effort.  The Shawn Reilly site has been up for about 2 months and found 2 keywords on Google.  SEMRush shows little organic traffic earned for the site or the opponents site.

I plan to address the SEO speed issue with a move to include a CDN.  To push the campaign to post video blogs on Youtube and Facebook which link back to the site and to build relevant backlinks to the site.  It’ll be interesting to compare the two sites SEO visibility as we get closer to the election.

The video walks through using GTMetrix.com to speed up a client site.  In the video we also use Think With Google and put a plugin called JetPack into place to serve as our free CDN option.

I don’t usually use Jetpack and prefer Cloudflare for the CDN but in this site’s case I lacked access to the domain DNS servers which hamper Cloudflare installation. 

Jetpack is a plugin of last resort, and I honestly don’t recommend it.  Its broken more sites than helped in my experience.

A Case Study of SEO Speed, Domain Authority And Keyword Rank

Let me show you how important speed is….below you see the search results for a keyword.  The one on the left is for desktop, the one on the right shows mobile.  They are close but one site out ranks another in mobile where it doesn’t in desktop.desktop vs mobile search results

Why is realtor.com not higher than zumper.com in mobile search on the left?  It is higher on desktop.  Consider these metrics:

Zumper.com = Domain Authority: 63 Domain Score: 37 Trust Score 44 Alexa Rank 17,000 Registered 2004 Ads 0 Backlinks 1,700,000 Traffic Rank 2830

In every metric realtor.com wins, so why is it below Zumper.com on the mobile search?

The site with a Domain Authority of 89 loses to the Domain Authority 63 site in mobile because that’s how important speed is on mobile searches.

We prefer gtmetrix.com for page speed tests.  You can also utilize thinkwithgoogle.com or pingdom.com. 

So in this example we clearly see a more popular site, with much higher DA, Alexa Rank, Backlinks and everything else you can think of beaten by a less established site and the single only factor the smaller site did better was speed.  We cant discount this as … well it’s only important in mobile.  In case you missed it…

Mobile searches now makeup over 60% of searches. I have one client who has 83% mobile searches…so its best to test your site SEO with mobile first.

Now when we consider the facts above let’s also dispel people’s over fascination for keywords and text optimization and position of frequency of words, the content length …. on-site SEO, the SEO of the 1990s as I call it… both sites present the same content to the desktop and mobile versions they just differ wildly in the speed.  

What are some of the reasons?  Realtor.com decided to present 16 rows of 3 images of homes to visitors while Zumper shows 4 rows of 1 image …. and then additional rows load as you scroll down.  Lazy Load and 1 image vs 3.  That’s how they keep their requests to about a third of the realtor.com page.

What Are Requests?

I’d suggest you think of requests as if they are shots from a gun at your head.  You need to avoid them!  Less shots is a lot better…

Requests are literally requests of the server before the page can load.  If I make a page with one image on it that is one request.  Lets say I decide to replace that image with a slider with 5 slides, now I have 5 requests … the same page area but that cool feature increases the trips required of a computer to quadruple!  

Lets say now I add social media icons to the page … Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and an email icon …. small and just up in the right corner.  

That social media addition just added 5 more requests.  Think about all the things on your page, they don’t all come together in one big Amazon package with a smile…. they are shipped to the computer individually.  

Now I have one page with 1 request and another with 10 and the initial difference isn’t much…that slider only displays one image at a time.

Latency And Requests

Servers don’t respond instantly…they take a little while to think and retrieve the requested resource and then it has to travel the distance from the server to your computer…may be at the speed of light, but light still takes time. 

This time is called latency.  50 milliseconds is a good latency.

If both servers in question had a 50 ms latency.  We can assume that the

Realtor.com server will take 50 ms x 301 requests = 15050 ms or 15 seconds

Zumper.com server will take 50 ms x 134 requests = 6700 ms or 6 seconds  

Now those latency numbers are just examples but I hope this explains why you want to limit requests, and prioritize speed as much as you focus on keywords and DA.

Ways To Decrease Requests

Do you need separate images?  On ultimateseo.org I wanted to show my COMPTia certifications.  I have 4 icons … I combined them to make one image.   Thats 1/4 the requests but no change in user experience other than a quicker site.

Lazy Load

Lazy Load also helps speed up the initial page load time.  If “below the fold” you have a lot of images on a page … the page needs those images still to finish the load unless you institute lazy load which essentially tells the computer to load an image only when it is coming into view.  

This makes sense likely if you have 300 images on the page and plenty of them are scrolled far down.  

I ran speed tests on the homepage of this site with Lazy Load on …. 3 tests results 2.3 seconds, 1.9 seconds and 1.9 seconds.  I turned off lazy load, and reran the test and got 2.3 seconds, 1.9 seconds and 1.7 seconds.  

So technically the site loaded faster with Lazy Load off….keep in mind it takes a bit of thinking for the server to implement it.

This helps speed up a site drastically if there are a ton of images spread vertically…but not much in a normal page.  What are the full implications on SEO when a site is crawled?

Its suggested by “Ask Yoast” that Lazy Load is fine for SEO and the images are rendered as Google scrolls down the page and indexes the content.

A CDN is also a great tool for site speed.  I recommend Cloudflare’s free option.

Link building is a necessary evil if you want anyone to notice your Music, Arts and Entertainment blog.  With people like the President of the United States now competing with you for entertainment exposure competition hasn’t been any tougher than today.

You can buy links on sites like fiverr.com but thats actually not a long term strategy.  I’ve likened buying links on these cheap sites to heroine.  Sure it gives you a boost and you’re high but you’ll find it’s harder and harder to stay high without doing more and more and you can’t recover from that addiction without help and hitting rock bottom.
And thats not dramatic of me … its literally like heroine.  You’re using something unnatural thats a quick fix to get high and feel good and it isn’t good content so its unsustainable without more and more fiverr links.  And you never know when you are going to get a bad hit that can kill ya.
Content Syndication Networks and Guest Posts
An alternative is to Guest Post offering something worth reading and of value.  On the receiving end if your site wants relevant content you can join a Content Syndication Network and ingest content regularly.  It can be setup to only publish after you approve and in the end it does diversify the information on your site for your readers.

Look For New Clients When You’re At Your Best – Ultimate Upwork Freelance Advice Web Host, Design, Data and SEO Services

I’ve penned a lot of articles over the last couple years and it never crossed my mind to really attempt at ranking for the keyword Louisville SEO.  I searched it tonight and found the top result was an SEO firm or agency that pretty much uses 1999 (same year they were founded) tactics on their ranking page.  
Keyword stuffing is supposed to have gone the way of the doodoo and I push clients away from over using a phrase.  This page uses the target keyword 46 times.   There 1000 word article is 5% of the time Louisville SEO.  
I thought well, this just has to be done.  As a native Louisvillian who works full time in SEO I can’t sit aside and allow the leader of this keyword to be everything I claim is dead in modern day search algorithms.  

This challenge I’ve decided to accept should serve as a testament to Louisville businesses seeking an expert in SEO strategy both Local SEO and National/Global SEO.  I hope to jump up in the top 10 by 2020, depending upon backlinks it could be a chore but we’ll see.
SEO is constantly evolving and what worked 5 years ago is not as effective today.  With that said what worked 20 years ago issimply useless today.  Its like solving math using an abacus … great for you for knowing how to use one but the tools time has passed.

Strategy For Ranking Keyword

My strategy for ranking within the results of “Louisville SEO” will be the same ones I push on clients.

Review the top 10 results for the keyword, see what they do well and do it better.  Take a little inspiration from each page and put all of that into your own.
Write content thats natural, useful to your readers and not too technical…

What is a unique thing you can do with others content?  The way you arrange it.  What if I setup a site that ingested the RSS feeds of all these political campaigns press releases and used it to create a site that had all the press releases for say US House seats.  That could be of value to someone and provides a research resource for after the election when those sites are down.  Theres an example of providing a useful service with mostly duplicate content.  Its unique that the type of content exists there in one place.
 
So now we see duplicate content isnt bad and in that we know that some authors want publicity but theyve never been heard of … so they need a platform to gain a following.  Some sites charge for “Ghost Blogging” but thats really not being big picture.  There are sites that want relevant content and there are authors after a site.

Comparing Digital Ocean Droplets and AWS EC2 VPS

How Is This SEO?

This may seem off topic but its on topic, technical SEO is imperative … you’re not going to rank number one on Google using Shopify or Wix.  It just isn’t going to happen.

Those platforms are not serious enough to deliver the configurability one needs to out perform a competitor.

This Isn’t Your Typical Review

It’s also apparently difficult to get solid advice on SEO Hosting from “experts” Best Blog Hosting for SEO is junk … reciting features doesn’t make a hosting plan the best…one quote notes that WordPress is already installed with InMotionHosting.com … so what!

Our web servers are preconfigured to install WordPress in every new account as well…it only saves maybe 5 minutes per user so that savings is not for the user but for a web host, that time adds up very quickly.  So that’s not a benefit for the client as much as it is for the host.

You likely aren’t a web host, so it’s not that big of a deal.  I’d like to see benchmarking tests they may have run to decide who is the best.  And we do … but thats coming in a few paragraphs.

I only mention these to point out typically articles covering which thing is better, focus on the irrelevant because the author lacks a clear grasp of technology and SEO.  Well, this isn’t one of those articles.

Promising More Than Physically Possible

Unlimited bandwidth…sounds great but what are the limits?  There are limits, the infrastructure that a site sits on has limitations.  If someone uses a CAT5 cable instead of a CAT6 everything will be slower and you’ll find a speed limit there.  It may be 5 gbps which is A LOT but … that IS a limit.

Bottlenecks can be designed into infrastructure by error and these can limit a site’s performance. Unlimited bandwidth means nothing because there are limits … physical limits exist and can’t be avoided.  So “unlimited” is a term being misused a lot in hosting today.

WordPress preinstalled saves someone 5 minutes but nothing else.  These aren’t important to the Hosting performance and way too many top articles on SEO hosting confuse WordPress’s selling points with the web host’s infrastructure.  That’s what this is all about after all, infrastructure and how it directly impacts a site’s Google ranking.

Google says that over half of all searches are now mobile.  Mobile is extra sensitive to speed and technical SEO matters.  Thats why its so important to set yourself up with the best infrastructure to build on.

Cloud Computing: Background On Our Use Case

The industry standard in web hosting administration software is cPanel.  No way around it with cPanel your support opinions are bountiful where as dreamhost.com has its own proprietary server software … its no better or worse in actuality, its just far less supported by third parties.

Ultimate SEO is hosted on a variety of cPanel servers that were easy to build and deploy, we made them from scratch and some with templates but all in all, there are 4 AWS servers, 2 Google Cloud Platform and 4 Digital Ocean. These currently are powering hundreds of sites including this site.  Cost varies wildly…

Shared Hosting Solution?

It’s important to note that your web host is honestly likely run on one of these three services.  Godaddy is … if you have their shared hosting your running on this environment.  You’re sharing their share of the cloud environment.

Why not just skip ahead and be the master of your domain….sure it will cost more than $3 a month … but that $3 a month hosting plan is shit.  You can have a decent VPS server for $5 a month with better performance.

We’re not going to mix apples with oranges though, this isn’t about shared hosting plans and a VPS.  The VPS will win.  A good review between AWS and a traditional hosting provider is AWS vs Blue Host

Amazon Web Services

I don’t even know what I am spending, where and how it is being spent.  AWS charges you for every little thing and no matter what steps you might take it may seem like rising project costs are simply unavoidable.

Their platform to work within is NOT intuitive … its damn near hell, and it will require some play time.

You’ll need to recall that you have to leave the virtual server’s configuration area to select an IP address to then assign to the server you were just configuring.

Then go back to the server configuration and keep working…till a minute later you have to go to some other obscure place.  (that will cost you money too…each ip address, not talking about bandwidth that’ll cost you too … I’m just saying the ip number).

Don’t even think about swapping hard drives and knowing what is attached to what unless you are prepared to write down long strings of numbers and letters.

AWS does provide greater flexibility than the others on options beyond just a virtual server…but unless you plan to send 100,000 emails a day you won’t benefit from their email service … as an example.

Cloudfront looks like a great CDN option, until you find Cloudflare.

Technical SEO wise I’d give AWS a D overall. Infrastructure and computing power is an obvious A+, but it’s how you interact with that, that weighs the grade down.

More so AWS limits your resources with Throttling and Burstable CPUs … these sound good but they mean they’re only giving you part of the resource not all of it.

Poor navigation and the nickle and dime pricing is absurd.  Want to monitor your usage so you can understand your bill?  Monitoring costs more…its ridiculous.  CloudWatch can be expensive.

They do offer reserved instances and I loaded up on those but still my costs never decreased.

AWS is so hard to understand billing wise that IT Managed Service Providers will offer free excel templates to figure out your AWS monthly costs.

It is never simple when you ask how much and are handed a spreadsheet to calculate the server costs.

Here’s something crazy…why my April bill was $167 but AWS forecasts it will be $1020 in May I have no idea.  I’m not adding servers…so whatever they know, I must not.

Google Cloud Platform

Is easier to use and wrap your head around but it is considerably more expensive than either of the other options. For this simple reason…they receive an F. The additional costs come with less options and less features than AWS.

Billing is more transparent and you can understand why your bill is what it is at least.  But Google also makes unilateral decisions for you like blocking smtp and ssh access.  

Sure its more secure but it makes email and server maintenance a nightmare.  You can add those to nonstandard ports in the firewall but then you have to keep up with an oddity.

Documents like this Connecting to Instances make it seem like not a big deal, but these will not allow you to move a file from your computer to the server like SFTP would.

They are expensive, offer less and needlessly shot you in the foot with their restrictions.  

That’s why I stand by the F as an overall grade.  Now infrastructure capabilities … A+ no doubt about it…but you’re paying a premium and placed into a box.

Digital Ocean

I received no compensation or thank you from anyone for writing this … Digital Ocean is my B+ graded cloud solution.  

It’s the cheapest, and they don’t seem to charge you a fee for tools that are required for the main product to function, unlike AWS and their static ip addresses.

They have the least ability and options outside of a virtual server.  If you want a database server that’s in the works unless you can use Postgres.  

UPDATE Sept 2019: MySQL Databases are now fully supported and available.  Additionally Microsoft.com has step by step instructions for installing MsSQL on Digital Ocean’s linux machines.

That’s limiting, but it is also not important if you’re just running a few web servers that will already have MySQL installed on them anyhow (if a LAMP server template is utilized).

Digital Ocean is the no frills, no surprises, cloud computing option.  The reason I have so many servers is because I am migrating everything off AWS and Google Cloud to Digital Ocean…it’ll be cheaper.  A lot cheaper…we’ll discuss performance in this article.

That’s right… $20 vs $121, $177 and $120 from AWS, GCP and Azure.  I didn’t really consider Microsoft Azure just because I have reservations moving into their sphere of control where every thing you need to do is addressed by yet another Microsoft clunky product that usually has little imagination in it.

Test out a server in each environment and I think you’ll quickly take to the Digital Ocean option.

But in deciding the winner of this debate I figure a more scientific method could be used….so let’s divide the debate into areas that can be scored and assessed.

As previously noted, the Digital Ocean’s dashboard is very streamlined compared to AWS.  With AWS you have to configure your network, and several other parts such as the keys before you can make a server that’s accessible to the internet.  

Digital Ocean, you can literally have a server running in less than a minute from a single screen.  Who else can claim that?

Base Cost

Digital Ocean’s costs are inclusive of bandwidth, hard drive size, ip addresses and more.  Everything you need to have a server is right there in one easy package.   Their packages include:

Amazon Web Services doesn’t allow an easy comparison.  Everything is charged individually it would seem.  They have a tool called Simple Monthly Calculator, it’s a spreadsheet basically … first off  if  you need a calculator it’s obviously not simple.

To compare something with the $5 option from Digital Ocean I used the calculator and a t2.micro which is 1cpu and 1g ram with a 25 GB SSD drive, with 2 ips and 1 TB of data transferred to the world, costs about $21.49 but that’s also after a -11.00 discount … without the discount it was 32.49.  That’s for the $5 Digital Ocean option.

Google Cloud Platform’s version of VPS using Compute Engine isn’t as bad to figure out as AWS but it is still seeming complicated.  I guess my beef with GCP and AWS is that if I spin up an instance I’m obviously going to have to have bandwidth so some baseline amount should be included … just because the instance cant function without it…so it should be part of the instance, I think.

So the N1 class is their general use server.  On-demand pricing is:

$0.0356 / vCPU hour and $0.00095444 / GB hour

So our 2 vCPU with 4 gb RAM is about $0.07 for vCPU and $0.0038 for RAM per hour.  Google shows 730 hours average in a month.  Meaning $51.38 a month.  That includes no hard drive or bandwidth ,.. but no use calculating it further as GCP is way in the lead as most expensive of the three.

Now you might say…well you get what you pay for … and I’d say … Not true in 10/10 tests. 

So at $5 to $32

But wait there’s more and this is the why you’ll switch to Digital Ocean.

Monitoring and alerts can be configured on both platforms .. both allow scaling up and adding additional storage as well as internal networking.  Internal networking has shown to provide fast results for configurations like a web server and an independent second database  AWS though has an expansive offering of options and wins out in this area.

Digital Ocean allows for credit cards as well as paypal.  AWS allows credit cards and bank accounts.  The difference then is Paypal vs Checking Accounts and since this is a cloud computing, tech product … Im going to prefer Paypal to a tool that has been around for hundreds of years.  So we’re going to hand it to Digital Ocean.

Each can transfer servers to other accounts.  I’ve only been successful in doing this with Digital Ocean and not AWS.  The AWS process is more tedious and you can give a server away that you aren’t an admin of anymore but still are responsible for billing somehow.  That sucks!

AWS only offers free billing support…although if you ask them a tech question they do tell you “as a courtesy” here is an article that might help…but tech support itself is out of your reach for free.  Digital Ocean allows you to message them and I’d assume some tech level of support for their platform without charging.

SEO WordPress Optimization

Initial success was quick to be realized in optimization of the sites images, the addition of a CDN network, html compression and image compression. After this first phase the site was loading at about 5 seconds on average.

This meant the site was loading in less than half as long as before but still almost twice as long as our three second goal. In reviewing what we had to do we identified three areas that we felt encompases a site’s speed.

I. Content – animations, js, css, images, video files

These are the basics that every site should have in place by default. Rarely does a new client have all of these in place.

II. Site Optimization – compression, software versions, CDN 

Adding Content Delivery Network or CDN as an optimization.  While a CDN is infrastructure its not required for a site to function but servers to improve the delivery of content, so for our purposes it is an optimization.

III. Server and Networking Infrastructure – host hardware,

Content For SEO Speed

Speed is important to SEO ranking. It’s incredibly important with mobile users which now out number desktop users on Google’s search engine. Google has an initiative called Mobile First and its title makes it obvious what they want to see from sites.

In previous tests we’ve seen a visible bump caused by a site’s speed performance. This was observed with at least 3 sites that were first on shared hosting, then given a dedicated VPS server.

Leaving behind the animations and scrollers is an easy thing for an SEO to advocate but it’s sometimes those elements that drive the site’s conversion rates. Content that’s rich in only text may be great for Google but it isn’t the best way to present yourself to future clients. Our goal was to minimize animation but leave content largely intact.

We also worked to resolve site errors and broken links within the content.

Monetized Bad Backlink Site With Spam Links

I wish we could collect money like a nonprofit from SEOs everywhere and raise the $10,000,000 asking price of theglobe.com and just turn it off.  Why is it I hate theglobe.com so much?  Cause their links are bad.

Previous to this post I’ve always said don’t use the Disavow Tool unless facing a manual penalty.  Its the Google answer … but I tried something, disavowed a few hundred domains all connected to theglobe.net and over the next 3 weeks I saw a marked improvement in keywords and their position.

A client had the same issue.  300 domains from Sweden many with theglobe.com in their domain name mostly all with it at least in the page title included in their link profile.

These aren’t backlinks someone purchased, at least not from the target company or their SEO for that matter.  They are nuisance links, you could use this site for negative SEO.  It regularly pops up in the link portfolio of domains as they are expiring which has always annoyed me because it portrays a Domain Pop higher than it actually is … the globe of course doesn’t count.

Theglobe.com actually last I checked charged for backlink removal!  That’s one way to run a profitable site…make it so bad it hurts SEO so webmasters will pay you to leave them alone.  Of course … then the terrorist wins.
