Link building is a necessary evil if you want anyone to notice your Music, Arts and Entertainment blog.  With people like the President of the United States now competing with you for entertainment exposure competition hasn’t been any tougher than today.
SEO Heroine
You can buy links on sites like fiverr.com but thats actually not a long term strategy.  I’ve likened buying links on these cheap sites to heroine.  Sure it gives you a boost and you’re high but you’ll find it’s harder and harder to stay high without doing more and more and you can’t recover from that addiction without help and hitting rock bottom.
And thats not dramatic of me … its literally like heroine.  You’re using something unnatural thats a quick fix to get high and feel good and it isn’t good content so its unsustainable without more and more fiverr links.  And you never know when you are going to get a bad hit that can kill ya.
Content Syndication Networks and Guest Posts

Look For New Clients When You’re At Your Best – Ultimate Upwork Freelance Advice Web Host, Design, Data and SEO Services

I’ve penned a lot of articles over the last couple years and it never crossed my mind to really attempt at ranking for the keyword Louisville SEO.  I searched it tonight and found the top result was an SEO firm or agency that pretty much uses 1999 (same year they were founded) tactics on their ranking page.
Keyword stuffing is supposed to have gone the way of the doodoo and I push clients away from over using a phrase.  This page uses the target keyword 46 times.   There 1000 word article is 5% of the time Louisville SEO.
I thought well, this just has to be done.  As a native Louisvillian who works full time in SEO I can’t sit aside and allow the leader of this keyword to be everything I claim is dead in modern day search algorithms.

This challenge I’ve decided to accept should serve as a testament to Louisville businesses seeking an expert in SEO strategy both Local SEO and National/Global SEO.  I hope to jump up in the top 10 by 2020, depending upon backlinks it could be a chore but we’ll see.
SEO is constantly evolving and what worked 5 years ago is not as effective today.  With that said what worked 20 years ago issimply useless today.  Its like solving math using an abacus … great for you for knowing how to use one but the tools time has passed.

Strategy For Ranking Keyword

My strategy for ranking within the results of “Louisville SEO” will be the same ones I push on clients.

Review the top 10 results for the keyword, see what they do well and do it better.  Take a little inspiration from each page and put all of that into your own.
Write content thats natural, useful to your readers and not too technical…

So this is more a test artcle but it’ll also hit on these topics in the title. Duplicate Content is everywhere and its fine…Googles been saying that for years now but some SEOs have this myth in their head that its an issue.  If its such an issue then what about The Associated Press?  The AP syndicates content to almost every local newspaper out there.  Their sites arent penalized for blocks and blocks of duplicate content.  While your chewing on that…

What is a unique thing you can do with others content?  The way you arrange it.  What if I setup a site that ingested the RSS feeds of all these political campaigns press releases and used it to create a site that had all the press releases for say US House seats.  That could be of value to someone and provides a research resource for after the election when those sites are down.  Theres an example of providing a useful service with mostly duplicate content.  Its unique that the type of content exists there in one place.

So now we see duplicate content isnt bad and in that we know that some authors want publicity but theyve never been heard of … so they need a platform to gain a following.  Some sites charge for “Ghost Blogging” but thats really not being big picture.  There are sites that want relevant content and there are authors after a site.

It’s also apparently difficult to get solid advice on SEO Hosting from “experts” Best Blog Hosting for SEO is junk … reciting features doesn’t make a hosting plan the best…one quote notes that WordPress is already installed with InMotionHosting.com … so what!

Our web servers are preconfigured to install WordPress in every new account as well…it only saves maybe 5 minutes per user so that savings is not for the user but for a web host, that time adds up very quickly.  So that’s not a benefit for the client as much as it is for the host.

You likely aren’t a web host, so it’s not that big of a deal.  I’d like to see benchmarking tests they may have run to decide who is the best.  And we do … but thats coming in a few paragraphs.

I only mention these to point out typically articles covering which thing is better, focus on the irrelevant because the author lacks a clear grasp of technology and SEO.  Well, this isn’t one of those articles.

Promising More Than Physically Possible

Unlimited bandwidth…sounds great but what are the limits?  There are limits, the infrastructure that a site sits on has limitations.  If someone uses a CAT5 cable instead of a CAT6 everything will be slower and you’ll find a speed limit there.  It may be 5 gbps which is A LOT but … that IS a limit.

Bottlenecks can be designed into infrastructure by error and these can limit a site’s performance. Unlimited bandwidth means nothing because there are limits … physical limits exist and can’t be avoided.  So “unlimited” is a term being misused a lot in hosting today.

WordPress preinstalled saves someone 5 minutes but nothing else.  These aren’t important to the Hosting performance and way too many top articles on SEO hosting confuse WordPress’s selling points with the web host’s infrastructure.  That’s what this is all about after all, infrastructure and how it directly impacts a site’s Google ranking.

Google says that over half of all searches are now mobile.  Mobile is extra sensitive to speed and technical SEO matters.  Thats why its so important to set yourself up with the best infrastructure to build on.

Cloud Computing: Background On Our Use Case

The industry standard in web hosting administration software is cPanel.  No way around it with cPanel your support opinions are bountiful where as dreamhost.com has its own proprietary server software … its no better or worse in actuality, its just far less supported by third parties.

Ultimate SEO is hosted on a variety of cPanel servers that were easy to build and deploy, we made them from scratch and some with templates but all in all, there are 4 AWS servers, 2 Google Cloud Platform and 4 Digital Ocean. These currently are powering hundreds of sites including this site.  Cost varies wildly…

Shared Hosting Solution?

It’s important to note that your web host is honestly likely run on one of these three services.  Godaddy is … if you have their shared hosting your running on this environment.  You’re sharing their share of the cloud environment.

Why not just skip ahead and be the master of your domain….sure it will cost more than $3 a month … but that $3 a month hosting plan is shit.  You can have a decent VPS server for $5 a month with better performance.

We’re not going to mix apples with oranges though, this isn’t about shared hosting plans and a VPS.  The VPS will win.  A good review between AWS and a traditional hosting provider is AWS vs Blue Host

Amazon Web Services

I don’t even know what I am spending, where and how it is being spent.  AWS charges you for every little thing and no matter what steps you might take it may seem like rising project costs are simply unavoidable.

Their platform to work within is NOT intuitive … its damn near hell, and it will require some play time.

You’ll need to recall that you have to leave the virtual server’s configuration area to select an IP address to then assign to the server you were just configuring.

Then go back to the server configuration and keep working…till a minute later you have to go to some other obscure place.  (that will cost you money too…each ip address, not talking about bandwidth that’ll cost you too … I’m just saying the ip number).

Don’t even think about swapping hard drives and knowing what is attached to what unless you are prepared to write down long strings of numbers and letters.

AWS does provide greater flexibility than the others on options beyond just a virtual server…but unless you plan to send 100,000 emails a day you won’t benefit from their email service … as an example.

Cloudfront looks like a great CDN option, until you find Cloudflare.

Technical SEO wise I’d give AWS a D overall. Infrastructure and computing power is an obvious A+, but it’s how you interact with that, that weighs the grade down.

More so AWS limits your resources with Throttling and Burstable CPUs … these sound good but they mean they’re only giving you part of the resource not all of it.

Poor navigation and the nickle and dime pricing is absurd.  Want to monitor your usage so you can understand your bill?  Monitoring costs more…its ridiculous.  CloudWatch can be expensive.

They do offer reserved instances and I loaded up on those but still my costs never decreased.

AWS is so hard to understand billing wise that IT Managed Service Providers will offer free excel templates to figure out your AWS monthly costs.

Think I’m being over the top?  Check out this calculator form sheet by AWS to forecast your expenses.

It is never simple when you ask how much and are handed a spreadsheet to calculate the server costs.

Here’s something crazy…why my April bill was $167 but AWS forecasts it will be $1020 in May I have no idea.  I’m not adding servers…so whatever they know, I must not.

(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = “https://www.berush.com/static/webpack_bundles/remote.js?v=9”; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, “script”, “berush-widget”));

AWS costs are high and unpredictable

AWS costs are high and unpredictable

Google Cloud Platform

Is easier to use and wrap your head around but it is considerably more expensive than either of the other options. For this simple reason…they receive an F. The additional costs come with less options and less features than AWS.

Billing is more transparent and you can understand why your bill is what it is at least.  But Google also makes unilateral decisions for you like blocking smtp and ssh access.

Sure its more secure but it makes email and server maintenance a nightmare.  You can add those to nonstandard ports in the firewall but then you have to keep up with an oddity.

Documents like this Connecting to Instances make it seem like not a big deal, but these will not allow you to move a file from your computer to the server like SFTP would.

They are expensive, offer less and needlessly shot you in the foot with their restrictions.

That’s why I stand by the F as an overall grade.  Now infrastructure capabilities … A+ no doubt about it…but you’re paying a premium and placed into a box.

Digital Ocean

I received no compensation or thank you from anyone for writing this … Digital Ocean is my B+ graded cloud solution.

It’s the cheapest, and they don’t seem to charge you a fee for tools that are required for the main product to function, unlike AWS and their static ip addresses.

They have the least ability and options outside of a virtual server.  If you want a database server that’s in the works unless you can use Postgres.

UPDATE Sept 2019: MySQL Databases are now fully supported and available.  Additionally Microsoft.com has step by step instructions for installing MsSQL on Digital Ocean’s linux machines.

That’s limiting, but it is also not important if you’re just running a few web servers that will already have MySQL installed on them anyhow (if a LAMP server template is utilized).

Digital Ocean is the no frills, no surprises, cloud computing option.  The reason I have so many servers is because I am migrating everything off AWS and Google Cloud to Digital Ocean…it’ll be cheaper.  A lot cheaper…we’ll discuss performance in this article.

cloud computing cost comparisons

cloud computing cost comparisons

That’s right… $20 vs $121, $177 and $120 from AWS, GCP and Azure.  I didn’t really consider Microsoft Azure just because I have reservations moving into their sphere of control where every thing you need to do is addressed by yet another Microsoft clunky product that usually has little imagination in it.

Test out a server in each environment and I think you’ll quickly take to the Digital Ocean option.

But in deciding the winner of this debate I figure a more scientific method could be used….so let’s divide the debate into areas that can be scored and assessed.

Amazon Web Services vs. Digital Ocean

Simplicity at scale

Ease Of Use

As previously noted, the Digital Ocean’s dashboard is very streamlined compared to AWS.  With AWS you have to configure your network, and several other parts such as the keys before you can make a server that’s accessible to the internet.

Digital Ocean, you can literally have a server running in less than a minute from a single screen.  Who else can claim that?

Base Cost

Digital Ocean’s costs are inclusive of bandwidth, hard drive size, ip addresses and more.  Everything you need to have a server is right there in one easy package.   Their packages include:

RAM CPUS BAND SSDHD PRICE
1 GB 1 vCPU 1 TB 25 GB $5/mo
$0.007/hr

2 GB 1 vCPU 2 TB 50 GB $10/mo
$0.015/hr

3 GB 1 vCPU 3 TB 60 GB $15/mo
$0.022/hr

2 GB 2 vCPUs 3 TB 60 GB $15/mo
$0.022/hr

1 GB 3 vCPUs 3 TB 60 GB $15/mo
$0.022/hr

4 GB 2 vCPUs 4 TB 80 GB $20/mo
$0.030/hr

8 GB 4 vCPUs 5 TB 160 GB $40/mo
$0.060/hr

16 GB 6 vCPUs 6 TB 320 GB $80/mo
$0.119/hr

32 GB 8 vCPUs 7 TB 640 GB $160/mo
$0.238/hr

48 GB 12 vCPUs 8 TB 960 GB $240/mo
$0.357/hr

64 GB 16 vCPUs 9 TB 1,280 GB $320/mo
$0.476/hr

96 GB 20 vCPUs 10 TB 1,920 GB $480/mo
$0.714/hr

128 GB 24 vCPUs 11 TB 2,560 GB $640/mo
$0.952/hr

192 GB 32 vCPUs 12 TB 3,840 GB $960/mo
$1.429/hr

Amazon Web Services doesn’t allow an easy comparison.  Everything is charged individually it would seem.  They have a tool called Simple Monthly Calculator, it’s a spreadsheet basically … first off  if  you need a calculator it’s obviously not simple.

AWS Calculator

To compare something with the $5 option from Digital Ocean I used the calculator and a t2.micro which is 1cpu and 1g ram with a 25 GB SSD drive, with 2 ips and 1 TB of data transferred to the world, costs about $21.49 but that’s also after a -11.00 discount … without the discount it was 32.49.  That’s for the $5 Digital Ocean option.

AWS Costs

Google Cloud Platform’s version of VPS using Compute Engine isn’t as bad to figure out as AWS but it is still seeming complicated.  I guess my beef with GCP and AWS is that if I spin up an instance I’m obviously going to have to have bandwidth so some baseline amount should be included … just because the instance cant function without it…so it should be part of the instance, I think.

So the N1 class is their general use server.  On-demand pricing is:

$0.0356 / vCPU hour and $0.00095444 / GB hour

So our 2 vCPU with 4 gb RAM is about $0.07 for vCPU and $0.0038 for RAM per hour.  Google shows 730 hours average in a month.  Meaning $51.38 a month.  That includes no hard drive or bandwidth ,.. but no use calculating it further as GCP is way in the lead as most expensive of the three.

Now you might say…well you get what you pay for … and I’d say … Not true in 10/10 tests.

So at $5 to $32

Digital Ocean Wins

But wait there’s more and this is the why you’ll switch to Digital Ocean.

Options

Monitoring and alerts can be configured on both platforms .. both allow scaling up and adding additional storage as well as internal networking.  Internal networking has shown to provide fast results for configurations like a web server and an independent second database  AWS though has an expansive offering of options and wins out in this area.

AWS Wins

Billing Options

Digital Ocean allows for credit cards as well as paypal.  AWS allows credit cards and bank accounts.  The difference then is Paypal vs Checking Accounts and since this is a cloud computing, tech product … Im going to prefer Paypal to a tool that has been around for hundreds of years.  So we’re going to hand it to Digital Ocean.

Digital Ocean Wins

Freelancer Friendly

Each can transfer servers to other accounts.  I’ve only been successful in doing this with Digital Ocean and not AWS.  The AWS process is more tedious and you can give a server away that you aren’t an admin of anymore but still are responsible for billing somehow.  That sucks!

Digital Ocean Wins

Support

AWS only offers free billing support…although if you ask them a tech question they do tell you “as a courtesy” here is an article that might help…but tech support itself is out of your reach for free.  Digital Ocean allows you to message them and I’d assume some tech level of support for their platform without charging.

Digital Ocean Wins

So all in all…

The winner is Digital Ocean over GCP and AWS.

but … now an added update to question these assertions…

Adding Live Chat To Your Website With Drift

This is just a quick note of Drift and SEO.  Drift is a chat plugin, or embed code and a Cloudflare App which allows a site owner or staff to interact proactively with web visitors.  It’s great for lead generation and I have a client that swears by it which is what lead me to test it out.

I used it for a month or so on this site with minimal appeal.  Alot of the useful stuff seemed to require a paid account.  I couldn’t for instance see how many visitor didn’t use the tool vs the one person who did.  Annoyingly thats a very high price in terms of code sent to visitors that didn’t use it and that added processing time does affect a sites ranking.

How Much Did Drift Affect Page Load

Immensely.  Like a stupidly insane cost to page load was easily seen.  Its so bad I’ll tell ya out right I highly discourage Drift on any site attempting to rank on Google.  Here is the GTMetrix report for my site with Drift.

Page Speed With Drift

At 14 seconds the site is doing basically the worst I’ve ever seen.  Considering the page size and requests its not that big nor does it require a ton of requests.  I consider under 100 a safe place.  But that means nothing next to 13.5 seconds.

Now when I removed Drift and reran the test.  I got the results below…

Page Speed Without DriftThat’s what I mean by insanely stupid.  Simply removing Drift decreased the page requests by almost half!  The load time for the page drops to almost a third of what it was with Drift.  4.6 seconds vs 13.5 seconds is astonishing.  8.9 seconds … just call it 9 at that point.  The goal of course is under 3 seconds and Drift alone is 3 times the amount.  When we consider that 1000 visitors came to the site in the last month that would mean Drift added 9000 seconds to users wait time to load the homepage.  Imagine that Drift is on every page what that delay was PER PAGE!  The homepage alone would have taken 2.5 hours longer in visitors combined wait times.

It can’t be that bad….YES IT REALLY IS.  That’s horrific in SEO terms.  You had best get a huge amount of conversion and consider a PPC campaign because honestly your SEO rankings are set to tank in mobile searches.  Which begs the question, how important is it to conversions if no one comes to the site since its listed on page 3 because of Drift.

This was with using the Cloudflare App version, which should be the fastest way to do it.  It moves Drift closer to the visitors on the Cloudflare edge servers.

How Do We Fix Drift?

Drift has to address its sloppy coding experience.  Why they require 40 something requests is beyond rational thought.  The payload of your site’s pages isn’t going to clear the tower, Drift should rebrand itself Challenger.

Drift

I’m not trying to be over the top, but when one thing that’s supposed to help you, takes 3 times the total time you have to deliver your message … it’s not good.  I’d argue you’re better off with a page that loads in 4.6 seconds without it.

According to Google research each second over 5 seconds 10% of your audience abandons your site.  That’s nearly half the visitors lost if you can get the page to load in 10 seconds.

Drift Alternatives

Drift isn’t the only option either.  I haven’t tested these but they can’t be any worse…

LiveChat.com, twak.com, crisp.com, and there’s a ton more.

So summary…using Drift is like killing half your web traffic to ask 1 in 1000 how you can help.

Someone asked me if calling out a “hacker” makes you a snitch?  I smiled and told them, being a snitch is decent.  People who don’t like snitches are doing things they are ashamed of and know it.  In IT we need to be snitches a lot more and loudly.

Its pretty fun being your own web host, maintaining your own cloud resources and setting up the security protocols and so forth.  We’ve hosted about 300 sites at various points and presently maintain 120.  All of which are internal projects and resources.  This volume creates a lab for SEO experiments and … incidentally security lessons.

I’d say the single biggest threat to a web site I’ve learned is inactivity.  Simply leaving it to its own devices leads to returning and finding someone else has been there..these exercises are great opportunities to learn from.  I started creating pages titled with the IP address of bad actors … because its important to share information.

I’m looking closely at

The .de suggests Germany and .eu supports that with European Union.  Also .ru email addresses are red flags in the sites subscribers and users.  Russians….cute, but uncivil.

The ultimateseo.wtf site bandwidth maxed out alarmingly early this past month.  I set relatively low bandwidth limits on test sites to alert me if there is an unusual level of attention being earned but a site with nothing unusual on it.   That brought ultimateseo.wtf to my desk today and according to the logs it was via the FAQ section, which makes no sense…why the FAQs of a test site might bring 10gb of data transfer attention suggests a malicious event.  Primarily that attention came from those ips above.

You see they have been listed for a while on IP Blacklists.  Normally this is a nonissue as I block traffic to many trouble countries.  But this test site was a test.  Things were different and thats alright because we learn from it.  Primarily that Bashilov Alekseevich isn’t worth allowing access to your or anyone’s network.  He’s a pussy and he serves as the front of people wasting my time.

5.188.210.0/24 CIDR

So the next obvious thing is not to block the ips but the whole block of it since we see several ips in the same range.  CIDR 5.188.210.0/24 basically means 5.188.210.0 thru 5.188.210.255. Now we can block it in the site but thats the least we can do.  Networking of course comes down to 7 layers as you may recall and we can take this block to a higher layer…the server level would block communication on the whole server but I still feel thats too close to the target.  Digital Ocean’s firewall would be my preferred place to block communication.  But to my knowledge you are unable to specifically block communication on a certain port to a specific ip.  You can block every one and list everyone allowed, but the reverse isnt available.  Correct me if Im wrong in the comments.

So server level it is … now … for added distance we could put a server with the firewall on it between the world and the webserver but at this point that may be overboard.  There’s already a Cloudflare layer of security on most sites, incidentally this site was not using Cloudflare, normally they do but I just wanted to shake things up.  Then a firewall in the cloud, then a firewall and ModSecurity on the server. The on the site a firewall and security scanning.  To add another server with a firewall to just block one pussy on a test site isn’t worth the time.

I’ll continue to review the data and assess the test site’s likely compromised files.  Incidentally the site didn’t have our recommended security plugins in place but different security plugins.  WP-Cerber remains our recommended plugin and has been added now to replace the apparently defeated plugin that I wont name.

If your a webmaster, I encourage you to share the IPs of problem connections.  I never call these folks hackers, cause thats not what they are … they’re opportunist.   “They exploit an opportunity, such as an inactive site, or one that doesn’t use updated software.

Updating your site is the second biggest thing after activity that plays a role in security wins vs defeats.

Longevity isn’t long for freelancers who work fast and know what they are doing.

Conversely if clients are likely to remove you once they are doing well, what value does pay for performance bring?

This is the first entry of a series on being a freelancer.

It seems like, and I agree it makes little sense, but when your work, over several months has lead to the best possible outcome for the client and you’ve begun meeting and exceeding their goals, be ready for it to end.  Now in SEO the projects are never ending, there are always more things that can be done.  But as your work bears fruit you may want to look out and start interviewing new clients.

Examples I’ve experienced: In 2019 after working together for several months in increasingly important roles a client who was contracting 100% of my time. (Note…rule #1 never give 100% of your time. You can be gone in an instant and you’ll have no income till you replace this client, and you’re unlikely to find another one asking for all your time, leaving you in a state of crisis seeking multiple clients.).

The client had evolving monthly goals that often spanned off-project.  This sea of half finished gigs had to be completed or the projects would fail and while he had said to “pause” this project … I’d have to keep it going anyhow.  Keep in mind if an unfinished project imploded I worried I’d be the one holding the grenade. This fever of activity was good though, but just as my work delivered a 1200% increase in search traffic to his site.

I received a call one afternoon as I drove down the expressway after visiting the doctors office. My client, called literaly yelling at me saying he didn’t know why he needed me and I was out like that.  I think it had somewhat to do with me not being at my desk maybe or the fact I had missed an email to my personal account from his dad either way, the situation was obviously a problem.  Especially since at that time he had been paying me to hire a couple assistants to work arttime with me.

My contract was suspended, blocking me from billing any hours before I got home.  I even had some time I had worked that wasn’t billed yet but that was blocked.  The same client had just given me a bonus and a new project just a month before, but now the value I brought was questioned.  That project was to turn around their brand’s domain traffic on Google.

I was put on the project in late Apr and let go in late May.  At that time 1 month traffic was up 1200% and it had never been better, and it hasn’t been as good since.

The best I can tell you is that when your clients reaches all a big boom in sales and traffic you wont be earning a pat on the back, unless its a pat to the door.  Now you still need to make these awesome wins, just don’t mistake the scene as time to celebrate with them.  You aren’t them and they may even claim it was their own efforts.

I think its important and this is especially true in SEO, since you don’t produce a physical object that they can see and touch its especially important to produce reports and explain your value.  Now that hasn’t actually mattered, in this next example the reports were often discounted as just wrong.

Client Experts don’t know that they don’t Know they are not experts. They’ll likely fight your moves to change what they put in place, despite they saw the need to hire you.

Client Experts

See be weary of the client whos “an expert” in your field.  They are dangerous…they lack the knowledge that they aren’t an expert.  If they were so great why wouldn’t they just be an SEO Consultant?  Why hire you?  How could results be better after you joined the team?

Client SEO Experts are generally the enemy of their own goals and sites.  With unfounded confidence they can work to undo what you’ve orchestrated in a matter of minutes.  They constantly second guess you, and you may find yourself screaming.

I know I was when I shared that the site had record traffic, to be met with the sky was falling and monthly graphs emailed out proclaiming all you’d done wasn’t effective.  In that case I had to point out that the month graphs included the current month we were a week into….and for that reason, yes, there was a drop in traffic due to the lack of the month being complete.

Another Example:

Taken For Granted When Things Go Well

I started with a site that migrated to a new site in August.  I had 301 redirected their backlinks and ensured proper page load times but early on I had to question the new sites user experience.  What they sold wasn’t even on the homepage.  The were so obsessed with showing the location of all their stores they neglected to realize the average web visitor doesn’t care how many stores you have, or where all those stores are they care where the closest store to them is and thats it.  Showing them 8 or so other irrelevant locations intermixed with the 1 you want is a disservice.

And I don’t mean it was listed with other stores I mean a sea of images, phone icons with numbers and Google maps for each store.  It was too much and the user data showed it.  But over the course of the next 3 or 4 months I convinced them to allow me to make a blog for their site.

They said they already had one and it was at xyz.com. I noted that their main site was abc.com so xyz.com wasn’t doing them any favors with keywords or establishing content to draw in visitors.  After only two months their keywords had more than doubled and their traffic was the highest it had ever been in November, then even higher again in December.

By mid January I had all my access cut to and was tiold we did work on a project basis and the project was over. Luckily this time I had kept the client at about 1/4 of my business.  Sadly though when mentioning the performance they said it might have been their own efforts.  Deja Vu!  Traffic was never better, keywords were expanding like wild fire and I’d seen the site past a poorly executed multi-domain strategy and PPC strategy which both cannebalized organic SEO and now it wasn’t even my victory.

Moral of the story, you are NOT an employee.  They are NOT your friend and you’re gone when the problem is deemed fixed so at your high moments, start shopping for a replacement.

Review:

  • Never let one client dominate your schedule, once they leave they leave you empty.
  • Watch out for client experts in your field.  They’ll be the downfall of everything.
  • When things look great, start interviewing clients.

SEO WordPress Optimization

Initial success was quick to be realized in optimization of the sites images, the addition of a CDN network, html compression and image compression. After this first phase the site was loading at about 5 seconds on average.

This meant the site was loading in less than half as long as before but still almost twice as long as our three second goal. In reviewing what we had to do we identified three areas that we felt encompases a site’s speed.

I. Content – animations, js, css, images, video files

These are the basics that every site should have in place by default. Rarely does a new client have all of these in place.

II. Site Optimization – compression, software versions, CDN

Adding Content Delivery Network or CDN as an optimization.  While a CDN is infrastructure its not required for a site to function but servers to improve the delivery of content, so for our purposes it is an optimization.

III. Server and Networking Infrastructure – host hardware,

Content For SEO Speed

Speed is important to SEO ranking. It’s incredibly important with mobile users which now out number desktop users on Google’s search engine. Google has an initiative called Mobile First and its title makes it obvious what they want to see from sites.

In previous tests we’ve seen a visible bump caused by a site’s speed performance. This was observed with at least 3 sites that were first on shared hosting, then given a dedicated VPS server.

Leaving behind the animations and scrollers is an easy thing for an SEO to advocate but it’s sometimes those elements that drive the site’s conversion rates. Content that’s rich in only text may be great for Google but it isn’t the best way to present yourself to future clients. Our goal was to minimize animation but leave content largely intact.

We also worked to resolve site errors and broken links within the content.
